Thomas Armstrong (1832-1911)   
Businessman turned painter, Armstrong joined the Paris Gang in the 1850s, studying under Ary Scheffer. He returned via Germany and North Africa and began painting in a realist manner. Later work shows the influence of Moore and Whistler: Armstrong would already have met the latter in Paris. He became Artistic Director of the South Kensington (i.e. V&A) Museum.       Works by Armstrong at
