"An American, born in Italy, educated in France, who looks like German, speaks
like an Englishman, and paints like a Spaniard".
Born into an expatriate American family that was continually on the move around
Europe, Sargent became an excellent linguist which enabled him to get the most
out of his studies with Carolus-Duran.
Strongly affected by Spain and by Velázquez in particular, he developed a
dramatic, contrasty style and, after some initial turbulence, went on to become
the best-known portrait painter of his day. Late in his career, seeking a
worthier mode of expression, Sargent caught the mural bug like Brown and invested huge effort in the Boston
Public Library decorations.
