Francis Bernard Dicksee (1853-1928)   
Although a staunchly academic painter, Dicksee started as an assistant to Holiday, largely working on designs for stained glass, and subsequently contributed many illustrations to the Graphic and other magazines. In the late 1870s, he started exhibiting literary and historical pictures and also social comment in the manner of Orchardson. As these subjects went out of fashion around the time of the First World War, Dicksee concentrated on landscape and portraiture. He became President of the RA in 1924.       Works by Dicksee at
