The Marriage Act
Marriage to your deceased wife's sister is prohibited by Canon Law, and this was reflected in the Marriage Act of 1835. Various provisions were repealed after 1907.
The Marriage Act profoundly affected John Maler Collier and William Holman Hunt, who both wanted to marry the sisters of wives who had died young. In both cases they had to go abroad to do so and, after their return to England, faced considerable social stigma.
