Situated on the Mersey upstream from Liverpool, the grandeur of Sudley House is
sadly reduced: the grounds have become a sports field and the building has
slightly the air of an over-specified municipal pavilion.
Nevertheless there is a lot to see. In addition to the paintings listed, there
are many landscapes and marine paintings, a bust of Millais, and a very sexy Raeburn. Further
details and black-and white pictures of most of the paintings can be found in
the informative Victorian and Edwardian
Paintings in the Walker Art Gallery and at Sudley House.
When we last visited, the house was unfurnished, giving an excellent view of the
pictures. But the bare rooms, not being designed as galleries, did seem rather
melancholy. In a recent refurbishment, completed in May 2007, the gallery has
been overhauled and some period furniture introduced into the ground floor. It
looks good on the website. However there is now also an introductory room (with
video), two 'childhood rooms', a costume room and a temporary gallery. What has
been removed to make way for these innovations we do not know.
