Arms manufacturer's country palace, sporting ingenious mechanical toys such as
hydro-electricity. It's virtually impossible to get there without a car, and
the grounds are so extensive that the National
Trust actually let you drive around.
The house contains an extensive collection of Victorian pictures, including the
best set of Evelyn de Morgans outside the De
Morgan Centre (who own these ones too). There is a rather amazing gallery added
on to the top of the house, in which many of the pictures are displayed; even
so, as usual the NT emphasizes the interior as a whole, and viewing conditions
for some pictures are not perfect.
There is some interesting Victorian sculpture, and also stained glass by
Morris & Co, after designs by Brown, Burne-Jones and Rossetti.
