The contents and arrangement of Phryne online are copyright 2000 - 2005
by David Lavender and John Woodwark.
We believe that the citations of other people's copyright text in Phryne
are well within the fair-dealing provisions of current copyright legislation.
Although reproductions of paintings are common on the Web, it is not necessarily
the case that these comply with copyright legislation, even if the paintings
themselves are out of copyright. There is an issue of secondary copyright, and
photo libraries such as the Bridgeman make their money granting
permissions to the publishers of art books; and publishers are not the sort of
people to pay money if it could be avoided.
The illustrations in Phryne are either our own original material, or are
reproductions of pictures which are believed to be out of copyright, taken from
printed works which are also believed to be out of copyright. However, if you
think that your copyright (or, more likely, the copyright of an estate for which
you are acting) is being infringed, we invite you to contact the compilers for
an apology and appropriate action to rectify the position.
